The link between the oral microbiome and high blood pressure
Did you know that there is a significant link between oral health and blood pressure (and cardiovascular health in general for that matter)?
It’s amazing how two such separate parts of our body can be so intrinsically connected.
If you suffer with hypertension and you have ruled out or already addressed other factors, such as obesity, smoking, medications, and kidney disease, it may be a good idea to think about your oral health.
The science on the impact of the oral microbiome on cardiovascular health:
The oral microbiome refers to the microorganisms that reside in the mouth - bacteria, fungi, yeast etc. It’s this collection of bugs that plays a significant role in the generation of nitric oxide (NO) a molecule that dilates blood vessels, raising blood supply and lowering blood pressure.
NO also regulates vascular permeability, as well as preventing thrombosis (clotting).
How can we increase NO by promoting oral health?
Here are some basic ways we can support oral health without getting too much into the science.
Avoid smoking
Avoid antacids
Practice good dental hygiene - brush and floss twice a day
Limit mouthwash - commercial mouthwashes have a terrible impact on the oral microbiome
Limit sugar and processed food intake
Check your vitamin D3 levels - low levels are linked to periodontitis
If you have metal amalgam fillings, consider seeing a holistic dentist to have these safely removed and replaced
Check you don’t have sleep apnea and are not mouth breathing at night
